Agora is a film written and directed by Alejandro Amenábar. It´s based on Hitatia´s life, a woman whose father was the last director of the Library of Alexandria.
It stars Raquel Heisz as Hipatia.
The film won seven Goya awards, for example for: best screenplay, best costume design, best make-up and hairdressing and best special effects.
It was shot in Malta where Alexandria was rebuilt with magnificent sceneries: pagan temples, Christian Churches, a Greek theatre… and the Library. Agora is about a religious conflict that resulted in the destruction of the city, its cultural heritage, its Library… and the division of the citizen, Hipatia is a prominent astronomer, mathematician and philosopher who struggles to preserve the Ancient World wisdom with the help of her disciples. I strongly recommend it. It talks about matters of great importance for the development of the world: culture, religion, ideals… and of course, the relationships between people (hate, love, faithfulness…).
